Mood tracking on Apple Watch

  • Five mood capsules on your wrist — one tap logs an entry
  • Watch-face complication that opens quick-log from the time
  • Streak chip and a last-five-days strip, without opening your phone
  • Standalone watch app that syncs over your private iCloud

The hardest day to log a mood is the day you most need the record. When you are anxious, low, or running on four hours of sleep, opening a phone app is one step too many. On the watch, the whole job is one tap on your wrist.

What's on your wrist

MoodSync on Apple Watch is a standalone app, not a remote control for your phone. It shows five mood capsules — tap one and the entry is logged. Under them sit a streak chip and a strip of your last five days, so a glance tells you whether the habit held this week.

Everything syncs over your private iCloud. Log from the wrist at lunch, and the entry is waiting on the calendar when you open the phone that evening.

The complication

Add the MoodSync complication to your watch face and quick-log is one tap from the time. That matters more than it sounds. Ambulatory assessment exists because ratings captured in the moment avoid the recall bias that end-of-day reconstruction introduces2013. The complication removes the last excuse between the moment and the entry.

Late nights are the honest use case. Sleep and circadian disruption are closely tied to mood episodes in bipolar disorder2008, and a 2 a.m. entry is exactly the one you skip when logging means lighting up a phone screen.

Quick capture now, detail later

The watch logs the 1–5 mood only, and that is deliberate. The 0–3 clinical scales for depression, elevation, irritability, and anxiety stay on the phone, in the same two-layer scale as always — expand Details on the entry later if the day warrants it.

The split is what keeps the habit alive. Smartphone-based self-monitoring in bipolar disorder has been trialled over months, not days2015 — the version of tracking worth building is the one you are still doing in March.

MoodSync 2.0 requires iOS 17 or later; the watch app requires watchOS 10 or later.

If your wrist is bare

No watch? The Home and Lock Screen widgets do the same job — streak in sight, one tap into logging — without one.
