Year in Pixels: a complete guide to the one-page mood chart

A Year in Pixels is a whole year of moods on a single page. Each day is one small square, colored by how the day went. Three hundred sixty-five squares, one grid. By March you have a shape. By December you have a story you can read at a glance.
Where the format came from
Year in Pixels grew out of the bullet-journal community in the mid-2010s and spread through shared journal pages online. The recipe was simple enough to copy by hand: draw a grid with months as columns and days as rows, pick a small color legend — one color per mood level — and fill in one square each evening. No app, no export, just a pen and a page that slowly turned into a picture.
The idea behind it is much older than the hashtag. The NIMH Life-Chart Method — a validated tool for following bipolar illness over months and years — is built on the same move: one compact daily rating, recorded prospectively and read as a long visual line2000. Clinicians landed on the format for the same reason journal-keepers did. A year of days only makes sense when you can see it all at once.
Why it works: recognition beats recall
Ask someone how their spring was and you get a guess filtered through how they feel today. Research on ambulatory assessment shows why: retrospective summaries are systematically distorted, while ratings captured day by day preserve what actually happened2013. The pixel grid is the payoff for that daily honesty. You stop asking your memory to do analysis it is bad at, and hand the job to your eyes instead.
Humans are much better at spotting a visual pattern than at recalling one. A slow six-week slide that felt like "a rough patch" from the inside is unmistakable as a darkening band of squares.
Paper vs app: the honest trade-offs
Paper has real strengths. The evening ritual of coloring a square is calming, the page needs no battery, and nothing about a notebook phones home. If a hand-drawn grid is what you will actually keep up, keep it up.
The costs show up over time. A missed week on paper stays blank unless you reconstruct it from memory — the exact thing the format exists to avoid. One color per day also forces a single verdict on days that were depressed and anxious, or elevated and irritable. What episode shapes look like in pixels
This is where the grid earns its place, especially for mood disorders. Bipolar mood episodes run on a timescale of days to weeks2024 — which happens to be exactly the resolution a pixel grid displays best. Some shapes worth knowing:
- A solid dark block — a depressive stretch with a visible start and end. Its length is data your memory will round off.
- A short bright streak — a run of elevated days. Four squares and seven squares look very different here, and that difference matters.
- Alternating stripes — highs and lows cycling close together, easy to miss day-to-day, obvious in a grid.
- A seasonal edge — the same corner of the grid darkening in consecutive years.
